Your employer match: don't leave it on the table
Find out how the match works and contribute enough to get it.
Many employers add money to your workplace retirement account when you contribute. This "match" is part of your pay, and many people don't contribute enough to get all of it.
Find out
- Whether your employer offers a match, and the formula (for example, 50% of what you put in, up to 6% of pay)
- The vesting schedule: how long you must stay to keep the employer's money
- Whether you were enrolled automatically, and at what rate
Then
Check your contribution rate on your pay stub or plan website. If you're contributing less than needed to get the full match, consider raising it.
