Saving vs investing: which money goes where
Short-term money saves; long-term money can invest.
Saving and investing do different jobs. Mixing them up is how people end up selling investments at a bad time to pay for an emergency.
Save (insured accounts)
- Emergency fund
- Money needed within the next few years
- Known expenses like a car or a down payment soon
Invest (can go up and down)
- Retirement, often decades away
- Other long-term goals where you could wait out a downturn
A common order
- A starter emergency fund
- Get any employer retirement match
- Pay down high-interest debt
- Build the full emergency fund
- Increase retirement saving
